In the sixties and seventies Membrane Science and Membrane Technology were still in their infancy. A lot of enthusiasm in the researchers and engineers attracted by the potentialities of the membrane operations and a growing attention in the “public”. The field was typically multidisciplinary and the traditional scientific organizations were not able or not interested to coordinate or to promote activities in the subject. Some of visionairs decided it was necessary to create a scientific society devoted specifically to promote the cooperation between European Scientists and Engineers involved in the research and development in the area of synthetic and artificial membranes and membrane processes. The decision was fast and well accepted in the still relatively small membrane community of that time. The Society was created in 1982 as an International Association under a very liberal French low of 1901 and the Statutes was deposited at the Prefectur of Toulouse on Feb. 26th, 1982 under the number 1168, signed by Enrico Drioli (Italy); Gun Tragardh (Sweden); Philipe Aptel (France); Heiner Strathmann (Germany). Enrico Drioli was appointed as the President. The European Membrane Society at the beginning ESMST (European Society of Membrane Science and Technology), is now active for 40 years.
The special edition of Euromembrane 2022 will be held in Sorrento (Naples, Italy) the ”land of Sirens”, the perfect legendary conference and location to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the European Memebrane Society. The venue of the conference is the Hilton Sorrento Palace Hotel & Congress Center.
Enrico Drioli and Pierre Aimar will serve as Chair and Co-chair of the Special Edition Euromembrane 2022.
The event will be hosted by the National Research Council of Italy, Institute on Membrane Technology (CNR-ITM) and will be jointly organized with the group of Diffusion in Polymers and Membrane separations of the University of Bologna.
